18 Rarámuri Athletes to Represent Mexico at the Masters Indigenous Games in Ottawa, Canada

July 2, 2025—The Masters Indigenous Games (MIG) will be held in Ottawa, Canada, from August 14 to 17, 2025. This biannual sports and cultural event, organized by Indigenous Sport and Wellness Ontario (ISWO), seeks to promote the athletic spirit among Indigenous athletes from various countries, while fostering cultural exchange and Indigenous heritage. Competitions will take place in the following sports: basketball, volleyball, archery, athletics, and Arctic sports.

In 2023, the Embassy of Mexico in Canada coordinated the participation of seven Rarámuri athletes in athletics. They won a total of 12 medals: 6 gold, 5 silver, and 1 bronze in the 1500, 3000, and 7000-metre races. Approximately 2,000 CAD was raised, and an additional ‘run for a cause’ was held, with 25% of the proceeds going directly to the Rarámuri athletes. It is worth highlighting that both the promotional event and the MIG races were met with great enthusiasm from the Canadian public and authorities. ISWO expressed interest in continuing to support the development of the athletes and their communities through sports.

This visit represents a valuable opportunity to strengthen ties between the two countries, as well as to promote culture, sports, tourism, and collaboration in areas of mutual interest—particularly Indigenous affairs, gender equality, and youth engagement.

This year, thanks to the Fideicomiso de Promoción Turística ¡Ah Chihuahua!, Canadian Pacific, Link Education and Travel, and the Mexican Sports Committee, Mexico will be represented by 18 Rarámuri athletes in the athletics and basketball disciplines: Graciela Rojas Carrillo, Mayra González Bautista, Gloria Quintero Hernández, Aristeo Valencio Cubesari Murillo, Alfonso González Rodríguez, Juan Carlos Borja Carichi, María Dora Torres Fierro, Lorena Díaz Palma, Angelica Rufina González Fuentes, Verónica Contreras Jiménez, María Elena Cruz Corpus, Susana Rosario Gardea Carrillo, Elisa Fuentes Bustillos, Yerely Edith Rascón Rojas, Ana Leviña Guanapaña Salido, Mateo González Bautista, Patricia Olivas Flores, and Maria Isidora Rodríguez González, along with their coaches Violeta Vanesa García Álvarez and Sergio Aurelio Hernández Domínguez.

As part of the 2025 designation of the “Year of Indigenous Women” in Mexico, and in line with Mexico’s Feminist Foreign Policy, the Embassy of Mexico in Canada has promoted the participation of a women’s basketball team composed of 10 Rarámuri women.

The opening gala will take place at TD Place, Ottawa’s premier sports complex, and competitions will be held at a “cultural village” in Lansdowne Park. In addition to the sports contests, attendees will enjoy immersive cultural experiences, artistic expressions, culinary showcases, and the promotion of various products. Mexico will host a cultural and tourism promotion stand to highlight the country’s vibrant heritage.

This event offers a unique opportunity for the Rarámuri community from the Sierra Tarahumara to showcase not only their athletic talent, but also to engage in meaningful cultural exchange and build interpersonal connections through sport.

18 athlètes rarámuri représenteront le Mexique aux Jeux Autochtones des Maîtres à Ottawa, Canada

Les Jeux Autochtones des Maîtres (MIG) se tiendront à Ottawa, Canada, du 14 au 17 août 2025. Cet événement sportif et culturel biennal, organisé par Indigenous Sports and Wellness Ontario (ISWO), vise à promouvoir l’esprit sportif chez les athlètes autochtones de divers pays, tout en favorisant les échanges culturels et la valorisation du patrimoine autochtone. Les compétitions se dérouleront dans les disciplines suivantes: basketball, volleyball, tir à l’arc, athlétisme et sports arctiques.

En 2023, l’Ambassade du Mexique au Canada a facilité la participation de sept athlètes rarámuri aux épreuves d’athlétisme. Ceux-ci ont remporté un total de 12 médailles — 6 d’or, 5 d’argent et 1 de bronze — dans les épreuves de 1500, 3000 et 7000 mètres, et ont reçu environ 2 000 CAD en prix. Par ailleurs, une «course solidaire» a été organisée, dont 25% des fonds recueillis ont été directement versés aux athlètes rarámuri. Il convient de souligner que tant les événements de promotion que les compétitions des MIG ont été accueillis avec enthousiasme par le public et les autorités canadiennes. ISWO a exprimé son intérêt à poursuivre son appui au développement des athlètes et de leurs communautés par le sport.

La participation mexicaine aux Jeux constitue une excellente occasion de renforcer les liens bilatéraux, de promouvoir la culture, le sport, le tourisme et la coopération dans des domaines d’intérêt commun, en particulier en ce qui concerne les peuples autochtones, l’égalité des genres et la jeunesse.

Dans le cadre de «l’Année de la Femme Autochtone au Mexique» 2025, et en cohérence avec la Politique étrangère féministe du pays, l’Ambassade a encouragé la participation d’une équipe féminine de basketball composée de dix femmes rarámuri.

La cérémonie d’ouverture se tiendra à TD Place, le plus grand complexe sportif d’Ottawa, et les compétitions se dérouleront dans un «village culturel» aménagé au parc Lansdowne. En plus des épreuves sportives, le public pourra vivre des expériences culturelles immersives, assister à des prestations artistiques, découvrir la gastronomie autochtone et divers produits artisanaux. Le Mexique y tiendra un pavillon de promotion touristique et culturelle, mettant en valeur la richesse vivante de son patrimoine.

Cet événement constitue une occasion exceptionnelle pour la communauté rarámuri de la Sierra Tarahumara de faire valoir non seulement son talent sportif, mais aussi de prendre part à un échange culturel enrichissant, tout en développant des liens interpersonnels à travers le sport.
